Change in the Reporting of HbA1c from July 1st 2010
Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a measure of your blood glucose control over a 6-8 week period. If you are a diabetic, HbA1c is measured by your doctor every 6-12 months. The lower your level of HbA1c the less likely you are to develop the complications of diabetes.

Laboratories in Ireland are about to change the way HbA1c results are reported. The new format will be HbA1c (mmol HbA1c/mol Hb) . This change will allow easier comparison of HbA1c results reported in different labs. The change in reporting has been recommended worldwide by the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC).

From 1st July 2010, all HbA1c results in Ireland will be given in the familiar HbA1c (%) format and also in the new HbA1c (mmol/mol) format.

Colorectal Screening:
Blood in the stool can be a sign of colorectal cancer. Cancers and polyps in the colon and rectum often bleed because their blood vessels can be fragile and easily damaged by the passage of faeces. The damaged vessels usually release a small amount of blood into the faeces, but frequently not enough to be visible in the stool. The faecal immunochemical test (FIT), also called the immunochemical faecal occult blood test (iFOBT), can detect occult (hidden) blood in the stool. This test detects the presence of blood by reacting to the protein part of the human haemoglobin which is found in red blood cells.

The Board of the National Cancer Screening service has recommended that the FIT should be used as the primary screening tool for colorectal cancer in the Republic of Ireland. This screening programme is due to commence during the summer of 2010.
